Year 6 Residential Visit to Hilltop 2020

We are delighted to be able to offer the opportunity for the current Year 5 to visit Hilltop in October, early in Year 6.

VISIT DETAILS: Tuesday 6th to Friday 9th October 2020

Hilltop Outdoor Education Field Study and Adventure Centre in Sheringham, Norfolk, offers high quality field studies and outdoor adventure activities led by well-qualified experienced staff. Being located on the Norfolk coast, it is only two hours away.

As last year, the visit is planned for October – we feel that having the visit early in the school year offers many benefits.  After the ‘Hilltop Experience,’ the children return to their learning in school feeling more confident, resilient and able to take risks. This has a very positive impact as it helps them to feel they can overcome any barriers or obstacles they face. Along with the positive relationships with staff, team spirit and sense of togetherness which are also cemented, achieving this earlier in the year will support them, particularly as Year 6 can be a challenging year for many. Also, having listened to parents and responded by stopping the Year 5 visit to Sizewell, this timing places the visit roughly half way through the children’s Year 5 and Year 6.

The visit will include a range of adventurous activities, e.g. abseiling, climbing, high ropes, mountain biking, orienteering and zip wire. There will also be team tasks which promote trust and co-operation and an evening ‘Big Splash’ swimming session. To be able to participate in the activities, children will not need any special clothing – just a selection of old, warm and waterproof clothes plus swimming kit. More details will be sent nearer the time.

Depending on numbers, 5 or 6 adults from school will supervise the visit. Hilltop will also assign additional leaders to our group with trained leaders for each activity.

Accommodation is in bedrooms of various sizes; up to about 6 children per room. Children need to take a sleeping bag. Staff bedrooms are located close to children’s rooms. Many of the bedrooms have en-suite facilities. Three meals are served each day - these are cooked on-site and are much enjoyed!  On the first day the children need to take a packed lunch. Children travel to the centre by coach and/or minibus. As usual, the coach and/or minibus will be fully equipped with seatbelts and approved by Suffolk County Council.

The visit will require a contribution of £330 – this is made up of £305 for accommodation, food and activities and £25 for the transport and insurance.

We appreciate that this visit does cost a substantial amount of money.  We hope you are able to support us by allowing your child to take part in the Hilltop Adventure.

In order to meet the payment schedule from Hilltop we require a non-returnable deposit of £70 by Friday 14th February 2020. However, should we need to cancel the visit due to insufficient numbers, this deposit would be refunded.

This will need to be followed by further payments of £130 by Friday 30th April 2020 and Friday 10th July 2020.

Unfortunately, we have no flexibility with these dates as we are required to pay Hilltop in instalments following each of these deadlines. However, you are very welcome to pay in different instalments as long as the deadlines are met, e.g. in the past some parents have paid £20 weekly. We are happy to receive money via parentmail at any time!

Please pay on payment item Year 6 Visit to Hilltop 2020.

We highly value the annual residential visit as part of the Year 6 curriculum in terms of the valuable experience it provides the children, not only in learning across the curriculum, but the experience of being away from home; feeling independent and more self-confident as a result.

Please complete the slip below indicating whether or not you wish your child to be included in the residential visit.

Yours sincerely,

Mr Louis Collins
